This year, the Zonta Club of Beaufort made the special decision to award two Rising Senior Scholarships.

After reviewing an outstanding group of applicants, we were especially impressed by Makayla Jenaya Wilson and Margaret Grace Brown. Because of their exceptional academic achievement, leadership, service, and dedication, we felt both young women were truly deserving of this honor. Makayla is an outstanding recent graduate of Battery Creek High School, where she ranked in the top 10 of 177 students. In an extraordinary achievement, she also graduated this May from the Technical College of the Lowcountry with an Associate of Science degree. As a dual enrollment student, Makayla balanced her academic success while also working two part-time jobs throughout her high school years.

This fall, Makayla will attend Georgia Southern University to pursue a degree in Health Science. Her ultimate goal is to attend medical school and specialize in pediatrics. She hopes to return to the Beaufort and St. Helena area to provide compassionate healthcare to children and families in our community.

Margaret Grace, who goes by “Maggie,” is a recent graduate of Beaufort High School and will attend the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, where she plans to study Neuroscience and Nutrition.

Maggie’s high school accomplishments are remarkable. She took all AP classes, ranked 3rd academically out of 262 students, and worked during three of her four years in high school. She is a Semifinalist in the National Chemistry Olympiad, a Senior Scholar of the Beaufort County School District, and AP Scholar with Distinction. She has also been recognized by the College Board National Recognition Program.
